Attending university with fellow students younger than your eldest child takes courage at the best of times. Penny chose to study linguistics together with philosophy, and held her own among a group of bright young minds; often providing the benefit of experience, wisdom and astute observation to complex arguments in philosophy while never sounding arrogant or ageist. She thoroughly enjoyed her three years at UEA with enthusiasm and hard work, and graduated with a BA [hons] degree from the School of English and American Studies in 1988.

She had been told before graduation by a university careers advisor that she was unemployable because of her age, so decided to prove them wrong with typical determination, and immediately trained as a TESL teacher of English to foreign students at ITS language school in Hastings, going on to practise her teaching skills in Norwich to visiting student parties before becoming interested in proofreading and editing.
